Historic Achievement
Spurs’ sensational rookie, Victor Wembanyama, has had an outstanding debut season. Not only was he unanimously named Rookie of the Year and selected for the All-Rookie First Team, but he has also made history by being named to the All-Defensive First Team as a rookie—a first in NBA history.
Joining Elite Company
Wembanyama is the sixth rookie to be named to an All-Defensive Team. The previous five—Tim Duncan (1998), David Robinson (1990), Manute Bol (1986), Hakeem Olajuwon (1985), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1970)—were all selected to the Second Team. Wembanyama’s inclusion in the First Team sets a new precedent.
Narrow Miss in DPOY Voting
In the Defensive Player of the Year voting, Wembanyama finished second to Rudy Gobert of the Timberwolves. With 98 votes, he came just one vote shy of a unanimous selection for the All-Defensive Team, highlighting his significant impact on the court.
All-Defensive First Team Members
Joining Wembanyama and Gobert on the All-Defensive First Team are Bam Adebayo of the Heat, Herb Jones of the Pelicans, and Anthony Davis of the Lakers. Gobert’s inclusion marks his seventh, all as a First Team member. Davis, with five overall selections, is in the First Team for the third time. Adebayo, also a five-time selectee, makes his First Team debut, while Jones earns his first-ever selection.
Recognition from Peers
Adebayo praised Wembanyama for his impressive defensive skills, noting his 7’4″ frame and outside shooting ability, which drew significant attention. “He has indeed shown his prowess on the defensive end, and making the First Team is a huge honor,” Adebayo remarked. He expressed his own pride in finally making the First Team, emphasizing the importance of savoring and appreciating the moment.
All-Defensive Second Team
The All-Defensive Second Team includes Alex Caruso of the Bulls, Jalen Suggs of the Magic, Jaden McDaniels of the Timberwolves, and Derrick White and Jrue Holiday of the Celtics. These players demonstrated exceptional defensive abilities, earning them recognition as some of the league’s top defenders.
Wembanyama’s record-setting season has not only established him as a standout rookie but also as one of the premier defenders in the NBA, promising a bright future ahead. (Lvbet)
